GLOVE STORY

Civil rights and grumpy old boxers, what could  go wrong?

written by Ken Pisani • Directed by rebecca taylor

WORLD PREMIERE! APRIL 26TH - MAY 12TH 2019

THE GARAGE THEATRE, LONG BEACH, CA

Glove Story is a Sunshine Boys-like look at two (fictional) aging boxers, “Irish” Jimmy Morgan and Sandy “Sandman” Johnson, middleweight champions who fought a legendary trilogy in the 1950s and early '60s against the backdrop of a changing nation and the civil rights movement. “Irish” Jimmy won the middleweight crown from “the Sandman” in 1956, losing the title back in their 1958 rematch.

Both times, Johnson found himself distracted by racial strife—

first in Montgomery and then in Little Rock. When he retired for good after their 1963 draw to join the civil rights movement, “Irish” Jimmy never forgave him for refusing one final bout that would mark a definitive end to their rivalry.

“Among the very best plays I’ve ever read,

with genuine heart and very funny dialogue.

Laughter and tears are a great one-two punch.”

-- Michael David Wadler, Artistic Advisor & Board Chair,

The Colony Theatre Company, Burbank CA

“Pisani’s Glove Story is funny, sad, touching, and

demonstrates true humanity. It has everything in it that a major blockbuster film should have –

starring Robert DeNiro and Danny Glover, perhaps?

-- Angela Hatcher, Locale Magazine
